War and Remembrance by Herman Wouk

This is the second book about the Henry family. They are a military family and have members all over the world during World War II. It is sad when bad things happen but sad things happened to most military families during the war. It goes through relationships and family problems that can only be worse during a war. This is a good series to read and you can’t help but learn a lot about WWII.

Herman Wouk’s books were very popular a few years ago. They were made into movies and TV mini series. The Winds of War is about a family pre-WWII. As you follow the military Henry family around the world you learn about the problems that the world was having and the reasons for the United States to get involved in the war. It is a love story and an action story. Even though it is a big book, it reads pretty fast.

Follow the River by James Alexander Thom

Book Jacket

This is a fiction novel based on a true story of a pioneer woman. She live in 1755 in Virginia when it was a wild country filled with Indians. The book begins with a massacre. It is very hard to read and violent. I still think of the images that it describes and cringe. Her family is killed and she is taken hostage. She is taken by one of the Indians as a wife and treated pretty well but she never gives up trying to escape. After many months and one thousand miles of travel, she escapes. She tries to get back to her land and see if anything is left. She travels a thousand miles of wilderness that no white woman has ever seen before. This is a great book about a strong woman. It also has a lot of history in it that is very interesting.

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

The Princess Bride book cover

The Princess Bride is a story of love and adventure but with a very funny twist. Of course there is a princess and an evil prince wanting to marry her . Then there is the poor peasant boy who loves her and will save her from the evil prince.

This story is HILARIOUS! There are so many funny quotes in this book that when they made the movie they had to cut most of them out. It has become a very popular movie and is very good, but the book is so much more. Boys may be put off by the name, but it is definitely a book for all genders and all ages. I loved this book. It is one of my all time favorites.
