Standard I and II assessment Review

Today in class we reviewed 9 topics which will be assessed tomorrow in class.  These topics are:

Atomic Theory (How has the theory changed with time? Specifically what changes have been made to the model of the atom)

Molecules-Understand atoms combine to form molecules which make up all the substances and materials we use. Understand what changes when molecules are exposed to changes in temperature.

Properties of Matter-Liquids, Solids and Gasses, Understand the movement of molecules differs by each state of matter, also how does matter change from one state to another?

Atoms-Know the parts of the atom and be able to draw a model of the atom with appropriate charges, understand the size and scale of atoms to real objects for a basis of comparison

Metric Measurement-Understand which tool to use and how to use tools to measure mass, volume and length.  You should be able to calculate the volume of a rectangular solid, and how to find the volume of irregularly shaped object such as rocks (water displacement/Archimedes principle).  You need to know how to read a graduated cylinder and record the proper volume measurement.  Explain how volume of a gas may change when subjected to changes in temperature.

Density- Know the formula, how to calculate density, how different objects will sort by density.  Be able to organize various substances by their given densities from greatest to least and vice versa.

Diffusion- Understand that molecules are in constant motion and will distribute themselves from high concentrations to low concentrations.

Sorting-Earth materials are sorted by different density and particle sizes, be able to relate how this takes place in streams, on beaches, and how this record is preserved in road cuts.  Also, understand how the earth is sorted into layers by density.

Earth’s layers-be able to relate the earth’s layers in the proper order from least dense to most dense including the Earth’s atmosphere.  Be able to compare common substances at the surface of earth to actual materials which the layers are the earth are composed of.  Also, be able to interpret graphs related to the Earth and how density changes within the Earth.

If you review this material you should do well on the test tomorrow.  Happy studying!!

How the Earth was Made

Click the link below and answer the following question from watching the video.

How did the Earth’s layers come to be?  What processes and events led to this happening?

Additional research

Why is the inner core important to life on Earth?

How do we know there are layers of the Earth?

Atomic Story Assignment

Below are the requirements for the Atomic Story assignment.

Due: Thursday Sept 29

Points: 25 Points

In any method you wish please tell the story of the history of the development of the atomic theory.  You can do a booklet, poster, comic strip, mobile or any other creative means to tell the story.  Please do this yourself.  Your story should include the following:

  1. Include all the models of the atom discussed in class  (6 pts)
  2. Include the 5 scientists we discussed in class (5 pts)
  3. Include 4 colors (4 pts)
  4. Include visuals of each step of the model. (5 pts)
  5. Be Creative (4 pts)

Keys for success:

  1. Tell the whole story
  2. Make the story your own

History of Atomic Theory Presentation

Below is the link for the presentation we used in class this last week.  It is important you know the story and can tell it to someone accurately.  Use the presentation to assist you in doing your Story Project.

Graphing Notebook Assignment

We have been working on graphing in class.  There are a couple classes which didn’t have the data to graph.  I am including it in the link below.

Bell Work Alternate Assignment

There have been several who have asked to have a way to make up bell work from week one.  Normally this would not be possible as this is part of your notebook score.  However, since this is the first of the year and some were not aware they needed to keep track of these things I have given an alternate assignment.

Write a short essay to explain your experience with science.  This should include your past experience in elementary, what you hope to learn this year and what types of science interest  you the most.  Your short essay should be around 100 words.

If you have questions please email me or see me in class.
