Read180

The Scholastic Read 180 program is a researched-based program. It delivers individualized reading instruction based on the student’s ability level. It provides practice and application of skills to help the student progress in ability. Most of all, it uses technology and high interest subjects to motivate student to read and find success in their own abilities.

In conjunction with the in class work that the students do, they need to be reading at least 20 minutes each night. This will help the student to make the greatest progress this year. I am flexible on what the student is reading. Some students reading Dr. Seuss type books to sibblings, text books for history or science or even scripture reading as a family or individual. As long as the student is reading the words (even if someone else is reading out loud) they can count the time.

On Fridays, I collect the Reading logs. I require that the students turn in a log showing that they are reading a minimum of 20 minutes per school night. That means Monday thru Thursday nights equals 80 minutes due Friday for a normal week. The required amount is adjusted for a shortened school week. The reading log must be signed by a parent or guardian to earn credit.

I love teaching the reading classes. I have been impressed with the progress that students make when they do the program that way that it is intended. I have seen many students come in as 7th graders reading many levels below where they should be and then leave after 9th grade reading on level. It all comes down to the effort the student puts into the class.
