Functional Skills Classes

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

imagesThe goal of a high school special education classroom is to help students become as independent as they possibly can be. We hope that every one of our students will have full, meaningful lives when they exit the school system. We use unique programming to do this. The students learn every day skills such as functional math, functional English, cooking, community access skills, vocational skills along with state approved Essential Elements based on the Utah Core Curriculum. Students also work on leisure and social skills so they can effectively use their free time as adults.

Peer Tutor Classes

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

imagesIn this class you become one of the teachers. We will train you and then you will work directly with a student. Not only will you receive a grade partially based on your regular attendance, but you will also be required to complete a few homework assignments each term. These assignments are meant to increase your knowledge and understanding on a variety of disabilities and what it might be like to live with a disability.

In research, peer tutoring is important for two reasons. One, it integrates the  special education students. This happens when you spend time with them in class and outside of class. They become a part of Bonneville High School. Secondly, this experience hopefully makes you more aware and comfortable around people with disabilities. In the workplace and socially, I hope you encounter people with disabilities. Additionally, after completing this class, I hope you will not shy away from them but welcome them into your life!
