Iron Kid

Posted on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 in Uncategorized

Hey Everybody!

So some of you might be wondering what Iron Kid is all about.  This post will explain The Iron Kid Competition and all the details you might need to know.  First of all this is a district wide elementary competition.  All the elementary schools in the Weber School District will send three students from each grade 3rd-6th to attend the competition at the weber county fairgrounds in April.

What does the competition consist of? Each competitor must do the following…

40 yard shuttle run (5X)

Speed Stacking 4-6th grade 3-6-3,  6-6, 1-10-1 cycle.  3rd grade 3-6-3, 6-6 cycle

Frisbee Throw. Try to make two into the target.  Competitors get 10 throws each.

jumping jacks (10).  Arms must go above the head.

There is also an optional hula hoop contest at the end of the competition.

The students will work in teams by grade level.  It is a team competition (like a relay race).

To see video footage of the iron kid you can visit the weber school district website, click on departments, click on elementary, click on elementary p.e. blog. click on iron kid.

Basketball: shooting form and technique

Posted on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in Uncategorized

basketball shooting

The last couple of weeks I have been working with the students on how to correctly shoot a basketball.  Here are the cues I have been teaching them.

1)Keep the elbow in and Make an “L” shape

2) Line up both feet toward the basket.  If shooting with the Right hand then the Right foot is a staggered 2 or 3 inches ahead of the left. Stance should be shoulder width apart

3) Keep the head in the center of the body, not tilted to one side

4)Keep the wrist straight and have it snap down on the follow through

5) During the follow through the player lifts up onto toes

6) Use legs when shooting

7)  Aim for the back part of the rim or the square box on the backboard (for a bank shot)

8) Shoot with one hand.  The other hand is just a guide or support until the shot is released.

Sink the Ship

Posted on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in Uncategorized

First Grade learned a new game today!  SINK THE SHIP!  This game focuses on throwing, aiming at targets, and working as a team.  Each student is on a team and they have to stay on their ship (mats). They try and sink other team’s ships by knocking over all their pins with bombs (balls).  If all the ship’s pins get knocked over they must do a specific exercise and then they can put their pins back up and start playing again.  Each team has a dolphin that collects balls for their team.  The rest of the team has to stay in the ship or they’ll drown!  They sure did love this game.

Four Square….It Never gets old!

Posted on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 in Uncategorized

Four Square has been an elementary black top favorite for a long time now.  The kids are still playing it during recess!   As I have watched them play, it is apparent that the kids have come up with some of their own twists to the game (cherry bombs, slapjack, double bounce, ect..)  I like the creative names they are using and I love that they are putting their own spin on the game.   So I thought it would be fun to teach the students how to play the old school way.  They are trying to get used to the new (old) way, but they are catching on quick.  Maybe you can take your child out sometime and have them show you how to play four square the way we play in P.E.

We are the Eagles… and We Love P.E.

Posted on Monday, October 12, 2015 in Uncategorized

Hi! My name is Mrs. Toole and I am excited to start my P.E. blog!  I hope you will take the time to visit this blog and check out what your child is doing in P.E.

Here is a little information about Me.  This is my first year here at this school and I am already having a great time teaching P.E.  I have always loved P.E. since I was very young. After graduation from highschool, I went to Utah State University and received a degree in Physical Education.  I love teaching kids to stay active and take care of their bodies and minds.  It is so important that the youth have an opportunity to be educated on the benefits of a lifestyle that is filled with physical activity and healthy eating.  My goal in teaching, is to guide and teach these young people at an early age how living a healthy lifestyle can benefit them throughout their entire lives.

I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family.  We love hiking, four wheeling, camping, and mountain biking.
