The Trouble Tree

I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tire made him lose an hour of work & his electric drill quit, his ancient one ton truck refused to start.  As I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.
On arriving he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. Upon opening the door he had undergone an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.

Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do at the little tree.

“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, those troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.” Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.

Zearn and Imagine Learning at HOME!! Yippie!!

We do two amazing program here at school, Imagine Learning and Zearn.  It is not required to use these programs at home however, I strong encourage it.

Zearn accompanies our math program and is a great way for students to get extra practice on math lessons.  I have a link on the classroom blog under the heading “2nd Grade”.  Have student log in using the “Log in with Clever” button.  (see log in info below)

Imagine Learning is another AWESOME program.  It helps students with reinforcement of concepts taught in class.  Up until now, students have only been able to do it at school.  We now can offer access to you at home.

This program is set to work on your child’s level of understanding and build up from there.  They do not need help doing the activities and should be allowed to work through them independently.  If they get help the program will move them to more difficult concepts and they will become frustrated.  Please allow them to work on their own.

To log in….Students should already know their log in info.  See the following example.

Log in example for Matilda Wormwood

Username: last name followed by first two letters of first name (a few students have a number after first name letters.  Student should know if they do or not)

EX: wormwoodma@wsdstudent.net

Password: student initials followed by 115

EX: mw115

I have provided a quick link to Imagine Learning on the classroom blog under the heading “2nd Grade”.

Buddy Reading

We have officially started our buddy reading program in second grade.  You should have seen a large laminated envelope come home with a leveled book in it.  Please take the time to read the book with your child, sign the reading log form on the front of the envelope, and return it to school.  We will meet with buddies every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The time spent reading the buddy book counts toward the total 20 minutes of reading that should be done every night for homework.  If you child is reading a chapter book they should read one chapter here at school with their buddy and the next chapter or two (depending on how much you would like to do) at home with you.

Please help your second grader keep track of the envelope and book and return it every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Homework for Thanksgiving Break

Because we only have two school days next week due to Thanksgiving Break  we will be extending our unit of study to span two weeks.  Therefore, the yellow star sheet that came home today (11/15/18) had an attached half sheet and will cover two weeks worth of reading minutes.

Spelling words that came home today will be tested on Wednesday, Nov. 28th.  Both star sheets need to be returned Thursday, Nov. 29th.

I have provided links to the regular full page homework sheet and the half sheet for Thanksgiving Break if yours gets misplaced over the next two weeks.  Sorry, I am unable to post the fluency passage due to copyright.
