What to do at Home

Dear parents of students, grades 1-3,

Have you been wondering what you can do at home to help your child improve in reading?

Your child’s teacher and I are providing you a Home Connect letter at parent-teacher conference.  Please take the time to read through this informative two-page letter.  It explains how your child is doing with specific reading/literacy skills and, on the second page, tells of specific things you can do with your child to help them improve, however proficient they may be at this point in the school year.

It’s good stuff!  Check it out and give the activities a try, then let the teacher know how it went.

Happy reading,

Mr. Peer

Resources for You

Panthers,

Recently, a friend asked me about how and where to find books on the appropriate reading level for his daughter.  He found the following information useful.

Here are some links to find books at grade level for your child.

First, Scholastic has a good way of looking up reading levels of books:

http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/

Also, I recommend using your public library websites.  Here’s an example of what libraries provide as far as recommended books for certain grade levels:

Your child’s teacher and the school librarian, Mrs. Bronson, are good resources too, since every day, they see what kids of your child’s level like to check out.

Hopefully this helps,

Mr. Peer

Good Readers

Panthers,

The following are things to consider when trying to help kids become good readers.

How many of these things do you notice yourself doing while you read?

Good readers:

  • Draw on background knowledge as they read
  • Make predictions as they read
  • Visualize the events of a text as they read
  • Recognize confusion as they read
  • Recognize a text’s structure as they read
  • Identify a purpose for reading
  • Monitor their purpose for reading the text
